Director Allen Hughes recently shared some insightful thoughts about Snoop Dogg’s altruistic actions during his time at Death Row Records, shedding light on the unique dynamics between the rap icon and the legendary 2Pac.
In an exclusive interview with the Rap Radar Podcast, Hughes unveiled a side of Snoop’s character that often goes unnoticed in the annals of hip-hop history.
During the conversation, Hughes emphasized how Snoop Dogg, despite being one of the most prominent figures in the hip-hop scene at that time, willingly played a supporting role to allow 2Pac to shine. This act of selflessness was particularly remarkable, considering that 2Pac was simultaneously facing a murder trial.
“You got a guy that was the rockstar of that era,” Hughes said. “And in the same era, he’s on trial for murder… and thank God, [he] beats the case. And then you got all that little window where Snoop dimmed his light for 2Pac.”
Hughes went on to express his astonishment at Snoop’s decision, stating, “I never understood that back then. I remember Snoop just dimming his light and letting 2Pac shine when Snoop was the guy, y’know?”
This revelation provides a fascinating glimpse into the camaraderie and respect that existed between Snoop Dogg and 2Pac during their time at Death Row Records. While Snoop may have been a megastar in his own right, he chose to prioritize his friend and labelmate’s moment in the spotlight, further cementing his status as a true icon in the world of hip-hop.
