Shyne recently opened up about a dramatic moment in his life involving R&B star Brandy and fellow Bad Boy rapper Ma$e, revealing a love triangle that was as intense as it was eye-opening.
During an appearance on The Breakfast Club, the former rapper-turned-politician detailed how a confrontation with Brandy in the late 1990s gave him a much-needed reality check.
Shyne explained that he and Ma$e were entangled with the same woman, who happened to be Brandy, during her meteoric rise to fame. “Ma$e was dating a girl, and I started dating the girl, and that caused a big thing.
We had to have a family meeting,” Shyne said. Comparing the situation to basketball, he quipped: “It was like Kobe coming to the Lakers and going after Shaq’s joint. You can’t do that.”
At the time, Shyne admitted he wasn’t focused on his career. “That’s what I was on in ’98,” he said, noting how the entanglement served as a distraction. Things came to a head during an argument with Brandy, whose sharp words left a lasting impact on him.
“She said, ‘You’re nobody. You ain’t sold one record. You think you’re stylin’, you think you’re that… you’re nothing. You haven’t sold a record,’” Shyne recalled. “That hit me like the hand of God. She was telling the truth, and it brought me back to reality.”
The dramatic love triangle gained further attention after DJ Clark Kent, who was recently memorialized following his passing, shared additional context in the Hulu documentary The Honorable Shyne.
The renowned DJ alleged that Shyne and Ma$e were both dating Brandy simultaneously. Neither Brandy nor Ma$e has publicly addressed the claims, but the revelation sheds light on the tensions and personal struggles behind the scenes during one of hip-hop’s most iconic eras.
