Seattle Seahawks rookie Byron Murphy II got more than he bargained for during a team dinner this week… nearly a heart attack. The defensive tackle found himself at the center of a hilarious prank when his teammates convinced him he’d racked up a $155,000 restaurant bill.
The team gathered at Ascend Steak & Sushi for a celebratory feast ahead of their Week 18 clash with the Los Angeles Rams. The players indulged in a spread of gourmet dishes and pricey drinks, but the real fun came when it was time to settle the bill.
Murphy was handed what appeared to be the damage… a jaw-dropping receipt totaling $155,000. His wide-eyed reaction said it all, as his teammates amped up the drama with exaggerated shock and exclamations like, “Oh, s***!!”
But before Murphy could reach for his wallet… or his lawyer… the truth was revealed. The hefty receipt was a fake. The actual bill, while still significant at just over $38,000, was a far cry from the prank amount.
Murphy, who signed a $16 million rookie contract with the Seahawks, took the joke in stride. While $38,000 isn’t pocket change, it’s definitely easier to stomach than six figures.
