In a recent episode of the 4HUNNID Podcast hosted by YG, ScHoolboy Q addressed speculations surrounding TDE head Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith’s alleged role in the prolonged intervals between Kendrick Lamar and SZA album releases.
Dismissing online rumors, Q asserted that the blame doesn’t fall on Top Dawg, emphasizing that the artists themselves, including him, are accountable for the delays.
“People need to cut that out. They’re giving Top [Dawg] a hard time,” Q stated, placing responsibility on himself and his fellow labelmates. He expressed disbelief in the notion that Top Dawg would intentionally restrict prolific artists like Kendrick and SZA from releasing music regularly.
Q highlighted the commonality among TDE artists, pointing out that several, including Isaiah Rashad, himself, SZA, Kendrick, and Jay Rock, have experienced significant gaps between album releases. He stressed that it’s not a decision imposed by Top Dawg but rather a collective mindset within the label.
Addressing Top Dawg directly, Q humorously mentioned that despite their close relationship akin to father and son, he wouldn’t tolerate such extended breaks between albums, hinting at potential arguments if such situations arose.
Furthermore, Q jokingly attributed their shared perfectionist tendencies to a “mental illness,” implying that their desire for perfection contributes to the prolonged durations between releases.
