In a recent revelation on the popular podcast, Drink Champs, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, one-third of the iconic hip-hop group Run-DMC, shared a chilling anecdote about the night Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in Las Vegas.
According to DMC, the group was initially supposed to ride with Tupac to the MGM Grand for the Bruce Seldon vs. Mike Tyson fight, a night that would go down in history.
On the fateful night of September 7, 1996, following the Tyson fight, Tupac fell victim to a drive-by shooting, sustaining four gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries six days later. DMC disclosed that Run-DMC had been hired by 662 to perform at the afterparty and were expected to accompany Tupac to the event.
Suge Knight, the then-CEO of Death Row Records, had extended the invitation to Run-DMC through a call, with plans for the group to ride in the same car as Tupac. However, a surprising twist of fate unfolded due to the notorious perfectionism of Jam Master Jay.
As DMC recounted, the reason Run-DMC missed the chance to share the car with Tupac was a delay caused by Jam Master Jay’s meticulous wardrobe preparation. Jay’s elaborate and time-consuming dressing routine turned out to be a decisive factor that led to the group deciding to proceed to the afterparty without waiting for Jay.
Little did they know, the decision to forego the shared ride with Tupac would be a life-altering one. Upon arriving at the afterparty, the group was met with an unexpected turn of events.
A mysterious figure entered the venue, signaling everyone to vacate the premises. Soon after, a briefcase containing $200,000 in cash was presented to Run-DMC with a cryptic message instructing them to go home.
DMC says all members of Run DMC were supposed to be in the back seat of the BMW with Suge Knight and Tupac on the night Tupac was shot in Vegas.

It wasn’t until the following morning, while DMC was at the gym, that the shocking news of Tupac’s shooting emerged on CNN. The group realized the gravity of the situation and connected the dots, understanding that their decision to skip the shared ride had spared them from being directly involved in the tragic incident.
