Legendary rapper Rakim makes a surprising comeback with “G.O.D’s Network – REB7RTH,” his first album since 2009’s “The Seventh Seal.” Fans were eagerly anticipating his return, but what they didn’t expect was Rakim’s primary role on the album.
Released on Friday, July 26, Rakim takes on a new challenge as a producer, while still delivering vocals on six out of the seven tracks.
In a recent interview with Grammy.com, Rakim shared his journey into production. “I always was attached to making beats,” he said. “But I got to the point where I’m confident with my production now. I got the chance to produce the album and jumped at the opportunity.”
Alongside producing, Rakim also provided scratches for the album, showcasing his multifaceted talent.
The album boasts an impressive lineup of guest artists, including Kurupt, Masta Killa, Method Man, and B.G. In a touching tribute, the project features contributions from four deceased rappers, thanks to executive producer Matt “M80” Markoff. Nipsey Hussle, Fred the Godson, Prodigy, and DMX (through a heartfelt prayer) all have their voices featured on the album. Markoff explained that all the vocals were “in my stash or under my ownership.”
“G.O.D’s Network – REB7RTH” not only marks a significant return for Rakim but also highlights his evolution as an artist, stepping into the role of producer while still delivering the lyrical prowess fans have come to expect.
