Despite serving time in prison, R. Kelly hasn’t stopped making music. The controversial R&B singer recently revealed on the Inmate Tea with A&P podcast that he has written a staggering 25 albums since his incarceration.
During the episode, the 58-year-old was asked if he still practices music while behind bars. He responded passionately, saying, “Singing is a beautiful disease that’s incurable. That’s not gonna happen, stopping singing. I don’t care where I’m at. I’m always singing, I’m always writing.”
Kelly explained that he’s currently focused on securing his release, stating, “Right now I’m just working on getting out…I’m using patience as a tactic right now.”
The Grammy-winning artist made the call-in appearance after being requested to sing “Happy Birthday” to someone. However, instead of the traditional tune, he performed a snippet of his 1998 hit “When a Woman’s Fed Up.”
The show’s producer joined in by singing the intro to Kelly’s iconic track “Bump n’ Grind” before encouraging the singer to finish it. Kelly graciously acknowledged the moment, replying, “I appreciate the love, man. I appreciate you for knowing the words.” He wrapped up the segment with a brief performance of “Step in the Name of Love.”
Currently, Kelly is serving a 30-year sentence in New York for racketeering and sex trafficking, a conviction handed down in July 2022. Additionally, he faces a separate 20-year sentence from a Chicago case involving child pornography charges and the enticement of a minor.
Despite his legal troubles, Kelly remains creatively active, proving that his passion for music continues… even behind bars.
