On June 23, it was announced that Queen Latifah will be recognized at the Kennedy Center Awards on December 3, becoming the first female rapper to receive this esteemed honor. Alongside her, the recipients will include Billy Crystal, opera singer Renée Fleming, Barry Gibb of The Bee Gees, and the esteemed singer Dionne Warwick, as reported by CNN.
Deborah F. Rutter, President of the Kennedy Center, stated, “This year we pay special tribute to the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop, a uniquely American culture whose constant evolution is one of enduring relevance and impact, reflecting our society as it has grown into an international phenomenon,”
Rutter continued, “Hip Hop has been an important, thriving art form here at the Center for a number of years; what a privilege it is to bestow an Honors to the First Lady of Hip-Hop, Queen Latifah, who has inspired us along the way.”
As 2023 continues to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop, it is a momentous occasion for its pioneers, including Queen Latifah, to receive the recognition they deserve.
In a recent groundbreaking achievement, the iconic rapper, known for her empowering anthem “U.N.I.T.Y.,” became the first female rapper to be included in the National Recording Registry.
The announcement on April 12 unveiled this year’s inductees, featuring Madonna’s global hit “Like A Virgin,” Mariah Carey’s timeless holiday song “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Daddy Yankee’s 2004 smash “Gasolina,” and even Koji Kondo’s legendary Super Mario Bros. theme song, among others.
Explaining the inclusion of Queen Latifah’s debut album, the National Recording Registry highlighted, “Her album showed rap could cross genres including reggae, hip-hop, house, and jazz — while also opening opportunities for other female rappers.”
