President Joe Biden will Pardon those with federal convictions for possessing marijuana, he announced Thursday. He will be pardoning people with federal convictions for simple possession of marijuana. This could help out 6,500 people, according to the White House.
The President is urging states to pardon those same offenders. He also wants the department of Justice and Health and Human Services to review how marijuana should be scheduled under federal law.
“Too many lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana. It’s time that we right these wrongs,” Biden said.
“As I often said during my campaign for president, no one should be in jail just for using or possessing marijuana. Sending people to prison for possessing marijuana has upended too many lives and incarcerated people for conduct that many states no longer prohibit.”
