Pope Francis has been hospitalized this week for further medical care after being diagnosed with a polymicrobial respiratory infection, according to the Vatican’s press office. The 88-year-old pontiff, who had been battling bronchitis since early February, was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Friday for additional treatment and diagnostic tests.
Initially, the Vatican reported that Pope Francis’ health had stabilized over the weekend, with his fever subsiding. However, on Monday, new medical test results revealed a more complex respiratory infection caused by multiple pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Due to this, doctors recommended extended hospitalization for further treatment.
“The clinical picture is complex and requires appropriate hospitalization,” the Vatican stated. As a result, the Pope’s weekly general audience has been canceled.
Despite his health challenges, Pope Francis remains in good spirits, according to Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni. He has also continued his outreach efforts, including regularly checking in on the Catholic Church in Gaza amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Rev. Gabriel Romanelli of the Holy Family Church in Gaza City shared that the Pope personally called on Friday and Saturday and even sent a message on Sunday. “His voice was clear, although he admitted he needs to take care of himself,” Romanelli said in an interview with Vatican News.
As Pope Francis continues receiving treatment, the Vatican has yet to announce when he will be discharged or resume his full schedule. His health remains a key concern for the Catholic Church and its global followers.
