Popcaan, a popular Dancehall musician who has been signed with Drake’s OVO Sound label since 2018, has announced that he will soon become a free agent.
In an interview with Crack Magazine published on March 6th, the St. Thomas native revealed that he has a lot of music and while he loves the label, he also finds them a bit strange. Popcaan stated, “I have so much music. The label can be weird sometimes. I love the label, but I don’t like them…But I’ll be independent soon.”
The exact timeframe for his departure remains unclear, but Popcaan has promised to release another album this year, despite having just released his latest album, Great Is He (GIHE), on January 27th. GIHE is Popcaan’s third album under OVO Sound, which was a subsidiary of Warner Records between 2012 and 2022.
Popcaan, whose real name is Andrae Sutherland, also expressed his desire for his colleagues in the Dancehall industry to move away from the current trend of releasing sporadic singles-based riddims and instead focus on presenting more cohesive albums like GIHE.
“No one’s doing it,” he said. “I try to appeal to my Jamaican artists, telling all of them to put out more albums. People just see Jamaican music as singles.”
