The University of Pittsburgh football community is reeling from the heartbreaking loss of freshman cornerback Mason Alexander, who tragically passed away at just 18 years old following a devastating car accident in Indiana.
According to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred on Saturday night when a 2016 BMW, in which Alexander was a passenger, veered off the road in an attempt to avoid an oncoming vehicle. The car collided with a tree and burst into flames. Sadly, Alexander was pronounced dead at the scene.
Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi expressed his grief in an emotional statement, describing the devastating phone call he received early Sunday morning.
“I received a call this morning that no parent, teacher, or coach ever wants to get… the news of the sudden loss of a young and promising life,” Narduzzi said. “Our entire program is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Mason Alexander’s passing.”
Alexander had recently joined the Panthers in January, bringing high hopes for a promising collegiate football career. His sudden passing has left teammates, coaches, and the Pitt community in mourning.
As tributes pour in for the young athlete, Pitt football fans and the sports world are coming together to honor his memory. The university is expected to hold a memorial in his honor as his loved ones navigate this tragic loss.
