Two lucky paddleboarders recently had an encounter with a gigantic sunfish off the coast of Laguna Beach.
The gigantic sunfish is also known as a Mola Mola. The fish was spotted by Rich German and his friend Matt Wheaton, reports the San Jose Mercury News.
“We were just paddling and all of a sudden we were like “Oh my God.” That thing was massive.” said German founder of the ocean conversation nonprofit Project O.
“Most of my encounters are with dolphins and whales, but you never know what you’re going to see.”
They estimated that the sunfish was around 9 feet long. German wrote on his Meta (Facebook) post “you never know what you will see out there.”
“This morning Matthew Wheaton and I saw the largest sunfish (aka mola mola) neither of us has ever seen. This was only a few hundred yards off the coast.”
German told the media that “it was a unique and very cool thing to experience, and another example of why we need to protect the ocean and the amazing life that calls it home.”
