A routine school bus ride turned into a terrifying ordeal when a fire erupted on board, but thanks to the swift actions of an Ohio bus driver, all 15 middle school students made it to safety without injury.
The incident occurred Thursday morning as the Monticello Middle School bus traveled its usual route. Flames began near one of the rear wheels, prompting the driver to act immediately. Without hesitation, they evacuated the students, ensuring no one was left behind.
Liz Kirby, superintendent of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District, praised the driver’s quick thinking. “I can’t express how relieved I am that no one was hurt, and I am incredibly grateful for the driver’s immediate response,” Kirby stated. She also credited annual evacuation drills for preparing students to remain calm and follow instructions.
The Cleveland Heights Fire Department swiftly extinguished the blaze, and an investigation into the cause is underway in collaboration with the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Although Bus 21 had recently passed its state-mandated inspection on February 14, 2025, the district took extra precautions by re-inspecting all buses in its fleet.
Another driver stepped in to transport the shaken students to school, where administrators, teachers, and counselors were on hand to provide support. “I am truly thankful for the safety of our students and the thoughtful action from the adults who care for them,” Kirby added.
This near-tragic event serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness and the dedication of school staff who prioritize student safety every day.
