NFL legend John Elway was involved in a devastating golf cart accident over the weekend that left his longtime friend and former agent, Jeff Sperbeck, critically injured and currently on life support, multiple sources confirm.
The incident occurred Saturday evening in La Quinta, California, following a day spent at the Stagecoach music festival in nearby Indio. Elway, 64, had been attending a private afterparty with his wife and Sperbeck and his spouse when tragedy struck.
According to insiders, Elway was behind the wheel of the golf cart when Sperbeck, who had been riding on the back, lost his balance, fell off the moving vehicle, and hit his head on the asphalt. The impact reportedly caused severe head trauma.
Elway immediately called 911 following the fall. First responders arrived quickly and transported the 61-year-old to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. Though unconscious at the scene, Sperbeck was still breathing when medics arrived.
While law enforcement did not respond to the scene… likely because the accident happened on private property within a gated golf community… emergency teams did all they could to save Sperbeck. Sadly, sources say he remains on life support, and his loved ones are preparing for the possibility of organ donation.
At this time, there’s no indication of any wrongdoing on Elway’s part, and authorities have not launched a criminal investigation. The focus now remains on Sperbeck’s condition and honoring his legacy.
Jeff Sperbeck was more than a business associate to Elway… he was a trusted friend and key figure in his post-football ventures.
This tragic event has shaken both their families and the sports world alike.
