In a bizarre and dangerous stunt straight out of a Fast & Furious fantasy, a Missouri man learned the hard way that speeding nearly 100 mph isn’t the magical “get out of jail free” card he thought it might be.
James Hills of St. Clair County is now facing serious charges after trying to outrun police based on a theory he heard from his cousin… that cops won’t engage in a pursuit if a driver hits 100 miles per hour. Unfortunately for Hills, his PT Cruiser topped out at 95 mph before the flashing lights were in full pursuit mode.
The incident went down on April 21 when an officer from the Osceola Police Department spotted a gray 2008 Chevrolet tearing down Highway 13 at a dangerously high speed. When the officer gave chase, Hills allegedly cranked up the speed and nearly caused several collisions while attempting to swerve onto Highway B.
According to police reports obtained by Ozarks First, the suspect managed to lose the officer temporarily, slipping into a driveway across the street and running into a nearby house. But thanks to tips from observant neighbors, police were able to quickly identify and confront Hills at the residence.
Hills admitted to the high-speed escape, telling officers he was “testing a theory” his cousin suggested… that police wouldn’t pursue anyone going over 100 mph. Since he didn’t actually hit the triple digits, his test failed on multiple fronts.
The 20-year-old was booked into the St. Clair County Jail on a 24-hour hold, with a bond set at $20,000 cash or surety. He was charged with fleeing law enforcement and issued a citation for speeding.
Despite his reckless joyride and near collisions, police say Hills showed no remorse, reportedly saying he felt fine about the situation since no one got hurt.
As of now, there’s no official word on his next court date.
