Mexican prosecutors have opened an investigation into soldiers accused of fatally shooting six civilians during a violent highway incident in Tamaulipas, one of the country’s most dangerous cartel-ridden states.
According to judicial officials, the deadly confrontation happened Monday when troops encountered a white pickup truck on the highway. The Defense Ministry reported that the vehicle allegedly tried to ram into a military unit, prompting soldiers to open fire. Five victims were killed instantly, while a sixth died en route to the hospital.
The northern border state of Tamaulipas has long been plagued by brutal clashes between drug cartels, migrant traffickers, and security forces, fueling repeated accusations of extrajudicial killings by authorities.
Officials confirmed that the soldiers involved have been placed under formal investigation, though their identities have not yet been disclosed. The case has sparked renewed scrutiny over the Mexican military’s tactics in cartel hot zones, where residents often find themselves trapped between organized crime and heavy-handed security crackdowns.
