Mexican musician Ernesto Barajas, frontman of the popular group Enigma Norteño, was gunned down Tuesday night in Zapopan, Jalisco, authorities confirmed.
Police say two men on a motorcycle ambushed Barajas in a parking lot, killing him and another man, while a woman was wounded.
Barajas was known for performing narco-corridos… ballads that glorify cartel leaders. Enigma Norteño, with over 4 million Spotify listeners, has songs dedicated to “El Mencho” Oseguera, leader of the CJNG, and “Los Chapitos,” the sons of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.
His death follows a string of killings targeting narco-corrido artists, including five members of the group Fugitivo earlier this year. Mexican media reported Barajas had previously been threatened by the CJNG.
Authorities note that several states have banned narco-corridos, sparking riots at concerts where singers refused to perform cartel-inspired hits.
