Tragedy struck in Guadalajara, Mexico, as 23-year-old beauty influencer Valeria Marquez was fatally shot during a live TikTok broadcast. Authorities in Jalisco confirmed that the young content creator was attacked inside her own beauty salon, located in the Zapopan district, during what appeared to be a routine livestream with her followers.
According to investigators, a man entered the salon under the guise of delivering a gift before allegedly opening fire on Marquez. The motive remains unclear, but prosecutors have classified the case as a potential femicide… a gender-based killing of a woman, a distressingly frequent occurrence in Mexico. The United Nations reports that roughly 10 women or girls are killed each day in the country, often by intimate partners or relatives.
In the haunting final moments of the stream, Marquez can be seen sitting peacefully at a table holding a plush toy. Within seconds, gunshots ring out, and the video abruptly ends when someone picks up her phone to stop the broadcast.
Police arrived on the scene at approximately 6:30 PM local time and confirmed the influencer’s death. No suspects have been publicly identified, and the investigation is ongoing, with forensic experts working to piece together the events that led to the shocking attack.
Valeria Marquez had built a loyal online following of nearly 200,000 across TikTok and Instagram, where she shared beauty tips, lifestyle content, and glimpses into her everyday life. Fans and fellow creators have taken to social media to mourn her loss and call for justice.
Zapopan’s mayor, Juan José Frangie, stated there were no prior reports from Marquez about threats or requests for protection. He emphasized the gravity of the crime, calling femicide “one of the most horrifying forms of violence.”
As the investigation unfolds, many are demanding accountability and greater protections for women in Mexico’s digital and real-life spaces.
