A widespread blackout plunged large areas of Spain and Portugal into chaos on Monday, disrupting everyday life by shutting down subway systems, halting traffic signals, and rendering ATMs useless.
Spain’s primary grid operator, Red Eléctrica, warned that it could take anywhere from six to ten hours to fully restore power across affected regions. However, they remained tight-lipped about the exact cause behind the extensive outage.
Meanwhile, Portugal’s National Cybersecurity Center quickly assured the public that there was no evidence pointing to a cyberattack. Despite the reassurance, residents in both nations… including major cities like Madrid and Lisbon… faced major disruptions throughout the day.
By late Monday, Spain’s national electricity provider reported progress, noting that power was steadily returning to the northern and southern areas of the Iberian Peninsula. Officials promised that a full restoration was underway and would continue through the night.
