After more than three years of searching, a haunting discovery has reignited the high-profile case of Suzanne Morphew. Her husband, Barry Morphew, has been re-arrested and charged with first-degree murder following the recovery of her remains in 2023.
Morphew was taken into custody in Arizona after a Colorado grand jury returned an indictment. His bond has been set at $3 million, cash only, and prosecutors are working to return him to Colorado to face trial. He continues to maintain his innocence.
His attorney, David Beller, strongly criticized the renewed charges: “Once again, the government leads with assumption instead of evidence,” Beller said. “Barry maintains his innocence and looks forward to clearing his name.”
This is not Barry’s first encounter with prosecutors. He was previously arrested in 2021, but the charges were dropped in 2022 due to prosecutorial misconduct… namely, failing to disclose evidence, including unknown male DNA found in Suzanne’s vehicle. The dismissal was without prejudice, leaving the door open for the case to be reopened… which it now has.
Suzanne vanished on Mother’s Day 2020 near the family’s home in Salida, Colorado. The 49-year-old mother of two was reported missing after a bike ride. Her mountain bike and helmet were discovered in separate areas nearby, with investigators saying the scene appeared staged.
Barry posted a public plea just days later: “No questions asked. However much they want… I’ll do whatever it takes to get you back.” But court documents later revealed a fractured marriage. Suzanne allegedly planned to leave Barry, and he changed parts of his story as evidence developed… especially about the route he took the day she disappeared.
Suzanne’s remains were uncovered in September 2023 in a shallow grave during an unrelated search near Moffat, Colorado. In 2024, an autopsy confirmed she was the victim of homicide, but her cause of death was ruled “undetermined.”
In a disturbing twist, the coroner found wildlife tranquilizer chemicals in her bone tissue. Though there was no visible trauma, the presence of the drug was enough to raise serious questions. Investigators had previously discovered a tranquilizer gun and related equipment in the Morphew home.
After the original charges were dropped, Barry Morphew filed a $15 million federal lawsuit against local law enforcement, accusing them of violating his civil rights. His attorneys also pushed for disciplinary action against the prosecutors for allegedly hiding key evidence.
