Maino, the Brooklyn rapper, experienced a shocking surprise during a recent interview on Angela Yee’s Lip Service. A surprise phone call from a former inmate, whom he was incarcerated with, unveiled a secret about a “jail war story.”
During Angela Yee’s “Tell Us A Secret Segment,” where fans anonymously share secrets, Maino received a call from a person identifying themselves as “Sham.” Sham disclosed that he had supplied Maino with a weapon while they were both in prison during the 1990s.
Visibly astonished, Maino responded, “Oh my God! Aye, Sham, I recognize your voice.” However, Angela Yee scolded him for unintentionally revealing the caller’s identity. Maino quickly added, “Nah, it’s not anonymous since he already mentioned his name. This guy is wild. How have you been, bro?”
Maino’s acquaintance, Big Sham Shadin, joined the conversation and began sharing old stories of conflicts in jail. Unfortunately, the call was disconnected before Sham could provide further details about why he had given Maino the weapon in prison.
This encounter with Sham is just one of the many instances of violence Maino faced during his 10-year sentence at New York City’s Rikers Island. The rapper has been candid about his time there and described the facility as a “hell hole” in a 2017 interview with VladTV.
Reflecting on his experience, Maino disclosed the brutal treatment he endured from both inmates and correctional officers. He emphasized the hostile environment and the prevalence of violence, including multiple daily slashings. Maino expressed his agreement with the decision to close down Rikers Island, stating that the experience had left an indelible mark on him.
In a previous interview with Vlad in 2010, Maino recounted a personal incident where he was slashed in the face, resulting in a permanent scar. Reflecting on the lesson he learned from that encounter, Maino emphasized the dangers of underestimating opponents and the importance of humility.
