Lou Williams recently shared an amusing yet nostalgic story, revealing that despite meeting Jay-Z’s high-stakes challenge during his high school basketball days, the coveted Roc-A-Fella chain promised by the rap mogul remains elusive.
During an appearance on The Underground Lounge, the three-time NBA Sixth Man of the Year reminisced about his first encounter with Jay-Z, a moment orchestrated by none other than LeBron James.
The meeting, which took place while Williams was still in high school, had an unforgettable twist.
Williams recalled that when LeBron introduced him to Jay-Z, the Brooklyn legend, who was on a call, wasted no time getting straight to the point, questioning Williams’ basketball prowess.
“Bron introduced me to Jay, and while Jay was on the phone, he asked, ‘You nice for real?'” Williams recounted. “I confidently replied, ‘Yeah, I’m nice for real.’ That’s when Jay laid down the challenge, ‘If you average 30 points this year and win a state championship, I’ll give you a Roc-A-Fella chain.'”
Determined to prove himself, Williams not only met the challenge but exceeded it, averaging an impressive 37 points per game and leading his team to a state championship victory. Despite his outstanding performance, the promised Roc-A-Fella chain never materialized.
Reflecting on the unfulfilled promise, Williams humorously noted that he hasn’t crossed paths with Jay-Z in the 15 years since that fateful meeting, leaving the chain a legendary “what if” in his career.
