Artists often draw inspiration from their favorite counterparts, even in the early stages of their careers. Lil Wayne, too, had his moments of resemblance to Jay-Z, as per Birdman’s alleged observations. Although this seems peculiar in today’s context, it’s not entirely surprising considering the stature of both artists.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the New Orleans icon disclosed how Birdman once reprimanded him for sounding too much like Jay-Z, highlighting a unique aspect of his musical journey.
Regarding his current musical preferences, Lil Wayne stated, “When it comes to rap, I don’t listen to anyone else. I simply don’t have the time because I strive to improve every day.” He also shares this advice with his own artists, emphasizing that when one finds a favorite artist, their own style can inadvertently start to resemble that artist.
Lil Wayne credits Birdman and others for recognizing the similarity and urging him to differentiate himself. He recalled the moment with a laugh, saying, “Yeah, I was glad it was working. It’s like, ‘Oh, good, it’s working.'” This recognition propelled Lil Wayne to establish one of the most iconic and successful careers in the genre.
During the interview, Lil Wayne divulged various interesting perspectives and surprising revelations. For instance, he mentioned struggling to distinguish between his own albums, Tha Carter series, a topic that resonated with fans and sparked further discussion.
