Legendary musician Lenny Kravitz recently expressed his disappointment with the BET Awards, citing what he perceives as a disregard for his groundbreaking contributions to the music industry.
In a candid interview with GQ Magazine released on November 29, Kravitz shared his bewilderment at the treatment he has received from the television network and its prestigious award ceremony.
The accomplished rocker, known for collaborations with artists such as JAY-Z and SAINt JHN, lamented the lack of acknowledgment and respect as a Black artist from what he referred to as “urban” outlets.
In his words to GQ, Kravitz revealed, “To this day, I have not been invited to a BET thing or a Source Awards thing,” he said to GQ. “And it’s like, here is a Black artist who has reintroduced many Black art forms, who has broken down barriers—just like those that came before me broke down. That is positive. And they don’t have anything to say about it?”
Kravitz’s sentiments echo those of other artists who have criticized the BET Awards for what they perceive as being overlooked or snubbed by the prestigious event. Despite his significant impact on various Black art forms and his role in breaking down barriers, Kravitz raises valid concerns about the lack of recognition from platforms that focus on urban music and culture.
