A Las Vegas man who admitted responsibility in the death of his girlfriend’s 17-month-old son has been sentenced to probation, a ruling that is now sparking widespread public reaction.
Christian Moniz Rabino, 29, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in connection with the death of toddler Kai Tesoro, who died on June 6, 2024. Prosecutors said the child suffered fatal injuries after Rabino struck or violently shook him.
Despite the severity of the case, Rabino avoided prison time. Officials explained that conflicting statements from key witnesses… particularly Kai’s mother… weakened the case, prompting prosecutors to accept a plea agreement rather than risk an acquittal at trial.
A judge in Nevada’s 8th Judicial District Court ultimately sentenced Rabino to a maximum term of five years’ probation, a decision that has ignited debate over accountability, child protection, and the justice system’s handling of abuse cases.
