A summer getaway turned tragic this weekend after a boat overturned on Lake Tahoe, leaving six people dead, two hospitalized, and two still missing.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the accident occurred Saturday afternoon near D.L. Bliss State Park, a popular destination in Tahoe City, California. A 27-foot gold Chris-Craft boat, carrying 10 passengers, capsized around 3 p.m. following a powerful storm surge that hit the lake.
Authorities say the vessel was hit by intense weather, including 6-to-8-foot swells and winds reaching over 34 mph… conditions that created a sudden and dangerous environment on the water.
Emergency crews were quickly dispatched after reports came in of people struggling in the lake. Rescue teams managed to pull several individuals from the water, but six were pronounced dead. Two survivors were rushed to a nearby hospital, though their current conditions have not been released.
The Coast Guard is continuing the search for the two people still unaccounted for, using boats, helicopters, and sonar equipment. The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it will resume full search operations Sunday morning. Out of respect for the victims’ families, names have not yet been made public.
SouthTahoeNOW also reported that several boaters called authorities throughout the day due to worsening weather.
As the Lake Tahoe community mourns, officials are urging everyone to monitor weather conditions and stay alert while enjoying the water.
