A Los Angeles-area police officer remains in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle during a dangerous foot pursuit, authorities confirmed.
The incident began when officers from the Garden Grove Police Department responded to reports of a man causing a disturbance at a bar.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Lonnie Johnson, was later accused of threatening store employees at a 7-Eleven with a knife before fleeing on foot.
Video footage shows Johnson sprinting through busy streets, narrowly missing passing vehicles as officers followed. During the pursuit, one officer was struck by a red BMW with a black hood, sending him airborne upon impact.
Witnesses described the collision as violent and sudden. “You could hear the impact when the car hit him and see him fly,” one bystander said.
Authorities confirmed that the BMW driver stopped at the scene and fully cooperated with investigators. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing as the injured officer receives treatment.
