Killer Mike recently addressed the backlash from Travis Scott’s fans after he won Best Rap Album at the Grammys, beating out Scott’s Utopia. In an interview with Complex, the Atlanta rap icon expressed his respect for Travis Scott as an artist but made it clear that he stands by his work and its impact.
“As an artist, I deeply admire and have a lot of reverence for Travis Scott—he’s amazing,” Mike began. “But I’m never going to think anybody deserves something more than me, especially when I’ve put my best into my work. A lot of his fans might not like Mike now, and I have to accept that. That’s fine.”
Mike went on to explain that his music resonates on a deeper level, particularly during life’s most challenging moments. “There’s going to come a time in those fans’ lives when someone they care deeply for dies.
And the question is, what song are you going to turn to? I happen to have a record called ‘Motherless’ that speaks to that pain. A lot of those fans are young men trying to find their way.”
He continued by contrasting his music with Scott’s, highlighting the emotional weight his tracks carry. “I listen to Travis, and I jam to his music. But does his record make you shed tears?”
“Does it hit you when she won’t let you see your child, or when you’re dealing with child support, or facing jail time with a suspended license? That’s what my music does—it’s there for you. It’s the blues, baby. I’m here to take care of the whole human being and speak to the whole human being.”
Killer Mike’s response emphasizes the emotional depth and relatability of his music, setting it apart from his peers and underscoring why he believes his Grammy win was well-deserved.
