Jessica Simpson is opening up about her journey to sobriety and how it transformed her life and music. In a candid new interview with The Cut, the singer and entrepreneur… who recently separated from her husband, Erik Johnson… revealed that alcohol once made her “a little afraid” of herself, hindering her creativity and confidence.
Reflecting on her past, Simpson shared that during 2016 and 2017, she was working with some of the biggest hitmakers in Los Angeles but struggled to connect with her own artistry. “I have songs from that time that I never released because they just didn’t feel like me,” she admitted. “Every time I would write, I was a little afraid of myself. It was almost too much, especially because I was drinking at the time.”
That all changed when she decided to get sober seven years ago. Letting go of alcohol lifted a weight off her shoulders, allowing her to rediscover herself both personally and professionally. “Once I gave up drinking, the fears just diminished. They went away. And it was so much easier for me to access myself artistically,” she said.
Now, Simpson approaches music with a different mindset, prioritizing authenticity over commercial success. “I overthought everything when I drank,” she admitted. “Making this record wasn’t about having a hit. It was just about having a vibe. There’s really not a lot of that in Los Angeles right now… it’s all formulaic. I wanted to break that mold for myself. I don’t care if anything’s a hit. I’m not with a record label, and I don’t expect it to even be on the radio.”
Simpson’s honesty about her sobriety journey highlights the profound impact of self-discovery and healing, showing fans a new side of her artistry… one that’s raw, real, and fearless.
