Janet Jackson is setting the record straight after making some inaccurate statements about Vice President Kamala Harris’ racial background. The legendary singer recently walked back previous remarks where she questioned Harris’ Black heritage, now admitting that her earlier claims were based on misinformation.
According to Mo Elmasri, Janet’s longtime manager, Jackson had mistakenly believed Harris’ father was white. In a statement to Buzzfeed, Elmasri clarified that Janet had unknowingly repeated false claims she’d heard from others.
“Janet has deep respect for Kamala Harris and her trailblazing achievements as a Black and Indian woman,” Elmasri emphasized.
“She fully acknowledges both aspects of the Vice President’s heritage and recognizes the importance of factual accuracy in public discussions.”
In case you missed it, Janet’s comments originally surfaced during an interview with The Guardian on Friday. During the interview, she mentioned that she was told Harris’ father had been “discovered” to be white.
However, Harris’ father, Donald Harris, is a prominent Jamaican-American economist, while her mother is Indian, contributing to Kamala’s rich cultural identity.
With this clarification, Janet Jackson has expressed her respect for Harris’ accomplishments and the significance of accurately representing her Black and Indian heritage.
