A tragic hunting accident in rural Iowa claimed the life of a teenager over the weekend after a fellow hunter allegedly mistook him for a squirrel, officials confirmed.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) identified the victim as 17-year-old Carson Ryan, who was squirrel hunting with a group near Iowa City on Saturday afternoon. Around 3 p.m., gunfire struck Ryan in the back of the head. According to investigators, the shot came from someone in his own hunting party who “mistook him for a squirrel.”
Ryan was rushed to University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. Both the DNR and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office are leading the investigation into the shooting.
The tragedy has left the Washington High School community devastated. The school’s boys’ track and field team shared a heartfelt tribute online, posting a photo of Carson in uniform with the caption:
“Washington Boy’s Track & Field team asks you keep Carson’s mom, family, classmates, and teammates in your hearts as we navigate the devastating loss of Carson. Our hearts are broken.”
Nearby Pekin Schools also expressed support, encouraging staff and students to wear orange and black… Washington High’s school colors… on Monday to honor Ryan’s memory.
A GoFundMe campaign set up for the Ryan family has already raised more than $50,000. The fundraiser describes Carson as “a son, friend, and bright light to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
Officials stressed that the incident remains under investigation and reminded hunters to follow strict safety practices while in the field.
