Steve Smith Sr. is keeping his humor alive despite facing a high-profile lawsuit… even turning his legal troubles into a live broadcast punchline during Thursday night’s Panthers vs. Steelers game in Charlotte.
The former All-Pro wide receiver was in the booth providing commentary when his colleagues read off a promo for Bojangles. Asked if he’d treat fans to a chicken sandwich, Smith didn’t hesitate to poke fun at his current situation.
“Man, y’all know my situation,” Smith said with a laugh. “I can’t afford to be helping anybody right now!”
The remark sent his broadcast partners into a fit of laughter, forcing them to pause before resuming coverage.
The lighthearted jab, however, carried serious undertones. Back in April, Antonio Martinez filed a civil lawsuit against Smith, claiming the NFL legend “willfully and intentionally” broke up his marriage after allegedly seducing his wife, Nicole Martinez, in Baltimore last year. Martinez is seeking more than $100,000 in damages.
Smith, who has denied wrongdoing, filed a motion to dismiss the case last month.
For now, though, the Panthers icon seems intent on tackling his battles with the same energy he brought to the field… with toughness, wit, and a smile.
