A devastating multi-tower fire ripped through a Hong Kong residential complex Wednesday, leaving at least 13 people dead and dozens more feared trapped as firefighters battled one of the city’s worst blazes in nearly three decades.
The fast-moving flames spread across several high-rise buildings within the massive Wang Fuk Court complex, which contains roughly 2,000 apartments. Seven of the eight towers were still burning hours later, according to early reports.
The fire tore through bamboo scaffolding surrounding the buildings… a construction staple in Hong Kong… fueling a rare and catastrophic disaster in a city known for its strict fire safety standards.
More than 760 firefighters were deployed to control the inferno, CNN reported, with one firefighter among the confirmed fatalities.
Authorities say at least 15 others were injured, and emergency shelters have been set up for displaced residents.
Investigators are still working to determine how many people remain inside as rescue teams continue their search through the smoke-filled towers.
