An 11-month-old boy from Hamburg is recovering after a life-saving brain surgery that was originally denied by his insurance provider.
Cam Casacci, born in September 2024, suffered a severe stroke at birth that caused relentless seizures. His parents, Brad and Alyssa, fought for months after their insurer, Independent Health through New York State Medicaid, refused to cover the out-of-network procedure.
After public pressure, the company reversed its decision, allowing Cam to undergo a seven-and-a-half-hour hemispherectomy at UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh… one of the most complex surgeries to treat epilepsy.
Now, Cam is recovering, and his parents are hopeful this marks the start of a seizure-free life.
“There are so many families denied care every day,” Brad said. “If our fight inspires others to keep pushing for coverage, it’s worth it.”
The Casaccis’ GoFundMe campaign is close to its $100,000 goal as support continues to pour in.
