A tense manhunt is underway after five people were shot at the Brass Mill Center Mall in Waterbury, Connecticut, on Tuesday afternoon. Authorities have confirmed the suspected gunman is still at large.
According to Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo, officers responded to reports of a disturbance around 4:40 p.m. Upon arriving at the bustling shopping center, officers discovered five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Thankfully, none of the injuries were fatal, and all victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
“This does not appear to be a random act,” Chief Spagnolo stated during a press briefing. “Preliminary evidence suggests a dispute escalated into gunfire. We’ve identified the suspect as a lone individual armed with a semi-automatic handgun.”
Investigators have recovered critical evidence from the scene that could lead to identifying both the weapon and the shooter. Local police are being assisted by state and federal agencies, including the FBI, ATF, and Connecticut State Police, as they comb through surveillance footage and other digital forensics.
Authorities are urging the public to remain alert but emphasized that there is no current threat to mall-goers or residents. Spagnolo added, “This will be a long, detailed investigation. Anyone who saw anything unusual should come forward.”
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont reacted to the shooting on social media, calling it a “tragic” incident. “Brass Mill Center should be a safe space for everyone,” he said. “We are thankful to the law enforcement officers who responded swiftly. Our hearts go out to the Waterbury community and the families of those injured.”
As the investigation unfolds, officials remain committed to bringing the gunman to justice and restoring peace to the community.
