Memphis Grizzlies rookie Jaylen Wells experienced a terrifying moment on the court Tuesday night, leaving fans, players, and coaches in complete silence after a devastating fall during a fast-break play against the Charlotte Hornets.
Midway through the game at Charlotte’s Spectrum Center, Wells soared toward the basket for what looked like an uncontested dunk. However, disaster struck when Hornets guard KJ Simpson slid underneath him in an attempt to prevent the bucket. With Wells already airborne, the undercut sent him flipping mid-air before crashing head-first onto the hardwood.
The arena fell silent as Wells lay motionless beneath the rim. Players from both teams immediately signaled for medical assistance. Simpson, visibly shaken, rushed over to check on Wells, and while his move didn’t appear to be malicious, referees ultimately upgraded the foul to a Flagrant 2 after review… leading to his ejection from the game.
Emergency medical personnel acted swiftly, stabilizing Wells’ head and neck before securing him on a stretcher.
