The Grammys have recently implemented stringent regulations for the upcoming 2024 Grammy Awards in response to the surging popularity of AI-generated music. The Recording Academy aims to maintain the essence of human creativity and has therefore specified eligibility criteria for AI-assisted songs. Notably, songs composed entirely by AI will not be considered for Grammy recognition across all categories.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Grammys CEO Harvey Mason Jr. provided further details on the AI rules. He emphasized that music incorporating AI elements or assistance remains eligible for entry and nomination consideration. However, the Recording Academy firmly stands against awarding Grammys to the AI-driven components of a composition.
Mason clarified the Academy’s position, stating that as long as a human contributor plays a meaningful role in the creative process, they will be duly recognized for a nomination or a win. The Recording Academy strongly believes that technology should enhance and augment human creativity rather than replace it entirely. Hence, this firm stance was adopted to ensure the integrity and value of human artistry in the award cycle.
It is important to note that songs featuring AI-generated vocals will not be eligible for performance categories. However, if a person has written the lyrics, the track can still be considered for songwriting categories.
Mark your calendars for the highly anticipated 2024 Grammys, scheduled to take place on February 4. The prestigious event will be held at the Cryto.com Arena in Los Angeles and broadcasted live on CBS.
