GloRilla had a standout Labor Day weekend as she celebrated a significant milestone in her music career. The Martin Luther King Jr. College Preparatory High School alum, who began her musical journey as a teenager, was a featured guest at Memphis’ annual 901 Day festivities, a tribute to the city’s iconic area code.
On Sunday, September 1, the rising star from Collective Music Group shared a series of photos on her Instagram, capturing the moment she was awarded the prestigious Key to Memphis.
In her post, she proudly captioned, “Memphis made me, Frayser raised me. I got da key to my cityyyyy ahhhhh Happy 901 day MEMPHIS!!!!!!”
The post quickly garnered attention, with shoutouts from big names like Megan Thee Stallion, Kid Capri, and Lola Brooke, among others, flooding the comment section with praise and congratulations.
GloRilla’s achievement comes just over a year after global superstar Drake received the Key to Memphis. Drake, who spent his childhood summers in the city where his father, Dennis Graham, hails from, has frequently paid homage to Memphis in his music and videos.
Shelby County Chairman Mickell Lowery, who presented Drake with the honor, remarked, “We love our own. Memphis music touches the world. You got a lot of Memphis blood in you and you’re definitely touching the world.”
However, Drake’s accolade stirred some controversy online. A viral tweet expressed frustration over the decision, pointing out that Memphis legends like Young Dolph, Key Glock, GloRilla, Three 6 Mafia, Yo Gotti, and Moneybagg Yo had yet to receive the same recognition.
GloRilla herself chimed in on the debate, sharing the tweet and adding her thoughts on the matter.
GloRilla’s latest honor cements her status as a key figure in Memphis’ vibrant music scene, proving that the city’s influence continues to shape the world of hip-hop.
