Former music mogul Suge Knight recently spoke out about the purchase of Death Row Records, the label he co-founded, by his ex-protégé Snoop Dogg and businessman Michael “Harry-O” Harris. While Knight said he doesn’t hold a grudge against Snoop, he expressed skepticism about the legality of the transaction.
In an interview with TMZ Hip Hop from California State Penitentiary, where he is serving a 28-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter, Knight claimed that Death Row was only forfeited after a lawyer failed to attend court and that the entire bankruptcy proceeding was a sham. He suggested that Harris may have committed bankruptcy fraud to get the label out from under him.
However, one issue with Knight’s theory is that Snoop had nothing to do with the bankruptcy case and only purchased Death Row from MNRK Music Group in 2022, while Harris had no publicly known involvement in the transaction.
Knight also shared that Death Row, without his name attached, doesn’t feel like the real thing to him. He claimed that his upcoming TV series on BLK Prime would reveal all the truths from his perspective. Additionally, he revealed his favorite releases from the label, with the “Murder Was the Case” soundtrack ranking high on his list.
Knight also shared an interesting anecdote about his experience with the 1994 film “Natural Born Killers.” He claimed that after being approached by the studio to contribute a song, he had to relinquish creative control. To counter, he came up with a fake movie centered around Snoop and recruited Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and DJ Quik for the soundtrack.
While Knight’s claims have not been proven, they have sparked interest and discussion among fans and industry professionals.
