A domestic dispute during a Monday Night Football game ended in tragedy after a Florida man fatally shot his wife and critically wounded his teenage stepdaughter before taking his own life, authorities confirmed.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd identified the suspect as 47-year-old Jason Kenney, who was watching the San Francisco 49ers vs. Indianapolis Colts game while drinking alcohol when an argument erupted inside the home. The confrontation escalated quickly, ending in deadly violence.
Investigators say Kenney shot and killed his wife, Crystal Kenney, then turned the gun on her 13-year-old daughter. The teen was struck in the shoulder and near the bridge of her nose. Despite the severity of her injuries, she survived.
Sheriff Judd described the girl’s survival as “a Christmas miracle,” adding that she remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Doctors say she is alert and able to speak.
According to the sheriff, the young victim told investigators she pleaded with Kenney to stop before he pulled the trigger.
“She said, ‘I begged him, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me… and he shot me anyway,’” Judd recounted.
As the argument intensified, Crystal Kenney reportedly told her 12-year-old son to escape the house and run to a neighbor’s home to call 911. The boy fled and heard gunshots as he was leaving the residence.
By the time deputies arrived, Jason Kenney had already fled the scene. Authorities say he called his sister while driving, telling her he had done something “very, very bad” and that the next time she would hear about him would be on the news.
Kenney later went to his father’s property, where he barricaded himself inside a shed. Law enforcement located him, but before deputies could intervene, Kenney fatally shot himself.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to piece together the final moments leading up to the deadly incident.
