Two Florida motorcyclists were hospitalized after crashing into a 6-foot alligator on I-4 in Volusia County. The bizarre accident left both riders injured but in good spirits.
Cameron Gilmore, 67, suffered a broken foot and several broken toes after he collided with what he initially believed was road debris.
“I saw this big blob in the road and thought it was a shredded semi-truck tire,” Gilmore recalled. But what he mistook for rubber turned out to be a massive alligator sprawled across the highway. The collision sent him flying from his bike.
“I was just flipping and sliding, praying it would stop,” Gilmore said. “Next thing I know, I was in the grass and couldn’t move much.”
Riding close behind him was 25-year-old Brandi Gross, who also crashed after spotting the gator too late to react.
“As soon as I realized it was an alligator, boom… it was already too late,” Gross shared. “The impact threw me off, and I ended up flipping over.”
Gross sustained a concussion and a fractured bone in her wrist. Despite their injuries, both riders remain in good spirits… and even a bit humorous about the strange turn of events.
“They’re calling me ‘Gator Gilmore’ now,” the older rider joked. “Though yeah, I’m still being called ‘Florida Man,’ too.”
The condition of the alligator remains unknown, and authorities are currently investigating the crash.
This wild Florida road tale is another reminder that you never know what’s lurking on the highway… especially in the Sunshine State.
