Fat Joe, the iconic figure of the Terror Squad, has revealed that he will be honored with the key to New York City later this month—a move that has stirred some controversy.
In an Instagram video shared on Wednesday, August 7, the Bronx native proudly announced that he would receive the prestigious award on August 20 at Orchard Beach, located in the heart of his hometown.
To mark the occasion, Joe will headline a free concert at the event, which kicks off at 6 p.m., with doors opening an hour prior. The celebration is set to bring the community together in a massive show of support.
However, in a follow-up video, Fat Joe opened up about the backlash surrounding his recognition. Despite his longstanding contributions as a New York rap legend and philanthropist, not everyone is pleased with the mayor’s decision to award him the key.
“I get the key to the city [on] the 20th, and, boy, was that a hard one. Hip Hop got a black eye,” Joe remarked. “The mayor and his team, especially his right-hand person, fought to get me this key, and there’s been some pushback.”
The “Lean Back” hitmaker, however, stood firm, highlighting his deep connection to the streets of New York, his commitment to feeding the community, and his role in opening businesses that give back.
“I don’t know another guy who keeps it realer with the streets of New York than Fat Joe, who feeds more people, opens more businesses. I don’t know what to tell you guys,” he added.
Though Joe did not name names, it’s clear that his forthcoming honor has ruffled some feathers. Nevertheless, the Bronx legend remains undeterred, ready to celebrate his achievement with the city that raised him.
