The family of a British woman who died after receiving a counterfeit weight-loss injection is urging the government to crack down on the dangerous black market trade.
Karen McGonigal, 53, passed away in May just days after being injected with what she believed was the diabetes and weight-loss drug Mounjaro. Instead, the dose she received turned out to be fake, according to her daughters, who spoke with ITV News.
Authorities have since confirmed that one individual has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with her death.
Her grieving family is now calling for urgent action to stop illegal suppliers and protect others from falling victim to unregulated injections. “More needs to be done to hold people accountable who are putting lives at risk,” her daughters stressed.
In response, Health Secretary Wes Streeting issued a stark warning to the public: avoid buying weight-loss drugs from unverified sources. “Do not line the pockets of criminals,” he said, highlighting the serious dangers posed by unregulated treatments.
