Former Major League Baseball pitcher Daniel Serafini has been found guilty of carrying out a brutal ambush on his in-laws that left one dead and another seriously wounded in an upscale Lake Tahoe neighborhood.
A Placer County jury delivered the verdict Monday, convicting Serafini of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and burglary stemming from a 2021 double shooting in the quiet community of Homewood.
The Victims… Robert Spohr, 70, Serafini’s father-in-law, was fatally shot in what officials described as a calculated, execution-style killing. Wendy Wood, his mother-in-law, was also shot twice in the head but miraculously survived… only to pass away later from unrelated causes.
Authorities allege the crime was carefully planned. Serafini’s accomplice and former nanny-turned-girlfriend, Samantha Scott, 33, drove him to the crime scene. The pair were arrested in 2023 after a two-year investigation that spanned multiple states.
Scott has since pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact and is currently awaiting sentencing after being released from custody.
Erin Spohr, Serafini’s wife and daughter of the victims, took the stand during the trial, revealing the couple had an open marriage and expressing continued trust in her husband. Meanwhile, her sister Adrienne Spohr has fought relentlessly for justice since day one.
“It’s been four years of hell,” Adrienne said outside the courthouse. “But thanks to the tireless work of the Placer County DA and Sheriff’s Office, justice has finally been served.”
