A Michigan man obsessed with Eminem has officially been convicted after breaking into the rap icon’s home for a second time, reigniting fears for the star’s safety.
According to the Detroit Free Press, 32-year-old Matthew David Hughes was found guilty on Wednesday (May 7) of first-degree home invasion and aggravated stalking. The verdict came after a brief trial during which Eminem, real name Marshall Mathers, took the stand to testify against his longtime stalker. The sentencing for Hughes is set for June 17.
The latest break-in occurred last summer. Hughes was apprehended shortly after the incident and has since been held in Macomb County Jail, unable to post a $500,000 bond. A judge previously issued a no-contact order, barring him from any communication with the multi-platinum-selling artist.
This isn’t the first time Hughes has intruded on Eminem’s private space. Back in 2020, the rapper reported waking up in his Detroit-area home to find Hughes standing behind him. When confronted, Hughes chillingly claimed he was there “to kill him.”
Although Hughes struck a plea deal at the time and was handed five years of probation in 2021, he violated it just months later when he was arrested for assault in November of that year. He served time behind bars and was released on parole in May… only to break into Eminem’s home again within months.
Even before all this, Hughes had already raised red flags. In June 2019, he was arrested for trespassing after being found sleeping inside a guest house on a property formerly owned by the rapper.
