In a remarkable turn of events, Eminem and Ed Sheeran, two unlikely companions, took to the stage together for an unexpected show-stopper. Rolling Stone has reported that the rap legend surprised his British singer-songwriter friend during Sheeran’s recent Ford Field concert in Detroit, the hometown of Eminem.
The crowd erupted with joy as the duo treated Sheeran’s enthusiastic fans to a captivating duet of “Lose Yourself,” followed by Eminem’s electrifying performance of his chart-topping hit “Stan,” after a heartfelt introduction by Sheeran himself.
During his address to the audience, Sheeran shared, “I wondered if I could play you a cover of an Eminem song tonight. I think you know it. We rehearsed it today. Let’s see how it goes,” Little did anyone expect that the stage would suddenly be graced by the presence of Eminem, commencing the song with his iconic opening verse, leaving the Motor City crowd awestruck.
Sheeran later addressed the crowd, saying, “Can I just say one thing, he was gonna come on and do one song, but I said you can’t come on in Detroit and just do one song. Do you want another song?” The duo then joined forces for a memorable rendition of the Marshall Mathers LP hit. Eminem and Ed Sheeran’s reunion marks their first joint performance since Eminem’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year, although they have maintained a friendly relationship since Sheeran’s collaboration on Eminem’s 2017 album Revival, specifically on the track “River.”
Additionally, Ed Sheeran has publicly expressed his deep admiration for Eminem, revealing how the rap legend played a significant role in overcoming his childhood stutter. Sheeran disclosed during an interview with Howard Stern in May that his uncle introduced him to Eminem, declaring him to be the next Bob Dylan and encouraging him to listen to his music.
Sheeran credits the process of memorizing and rapping Eminem’s records repeatedly as the cure for his speech impediment. Sheeran further emphasized their bond, acknowledging Eminem’s reclusive nature and their shared experiences of remaining connected to their hometowns.
