Grammy-winning producer Smitty reveals surprising details about the studio sessions and Snoop Dogg’s dedication to the forthcoming album, “Missionary,” produced by Dr. Dre.
In a recent AllHipHop interview, renowned producer Smitty shares exciting insights into the upcoming album “Missionary” by Snoop Dogg, produced by none other than Dr. Dre. With a deep connection between these West Coast legends, the studio sessions have been nothing short of extraordinary, reminiscent of the iconic 1992 debut album, “The Chronic.”
According to Smitty, the album promises not just great music but also an exceptional level of execution that Snoop Dogg is fully committed to achieving. He reveals, “Snoop’s in his bag.” Even amidst different time zones, Snoop reached out to Smitty, expressing Dr. Dre’s immense excitement, which rivals that of “The Chronic” era. Smitty recounts their conversation, where Snoop emphasized their unique bond, mentioning their past experiences of recording on yachts with Dr. Dre, setting the stage for this extraordinary collaboration.
Smitty further elaborates on their journey, mentioning a yacht trip to Croatia that became a turning point. During this trip, they recorded three remarkable tracks for Snoop. The experience left Snoop in awe, exclaiming, “Yo, this could be something!” These words sparked the creative fire and set the foundation for what is to come. Snoop’s dedication to executing the album’s vision inspires all those involved, fostering a sense of humility and commitment to creating exceptional music.
Recording with Dr. Dre is no small feat, as Smitty shares his firsthand observations of artists often intimidated by Dre’s meticulous approach. Dre’s perfectionism pushes artists to their limits, demanding countless retakes and revisions, only to change his mind the next day. Smitty explains, “That’s him. It takes a certain level of commitment to even rock with him.”
The announcement of their collaboration came during Snoop Dogg’s appearance on Stephen A. Smith’s Know Mercy podcast last October, where Snoop revealed their ongoing work on an album produced by Dr. Dre. This release marks their 30th anniversary since “Doggystyle,” and the album aptly titled “Missionary” pays homage to their first album, “Doggystyle,” which garnered widespread acclaim.
Snoop’s Instagram post in February added to the anticipation with a throwback photo of him and Dr. Dre, confirming that new music from this dynamic duo will grace our ears in the summer of 2023.
