Sean “Diddy” Combs, one of the most iconic figures in the music industry, is currently being held at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) after being denied bail twice.
The 54-year-old mogul faces charges of sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation for prostitution, following his arrest on September 16 at a Manhattan hotel.
After pleading not guilty in court on September 17, Combs was remanded to MDC, a facility notorious for dangerous conditions and understaffing. Sources have revealed that Combs is on suicide watch, though it remains unclear whether he is suicidal.
According to insiders, the decision to place him under such supervision is a preventative measure due to his shock and uncertain mental state as he processes the gravity of his situation.
The U.S. Department of Justice defines suicide watch as a heightened level of supervision for inmates showing signs of potential self-harm. Diddy’s legal team, led by attorney Marc Agnifilo, requested that the music mogul be transferred to a more secure facility in Essex County, New Jersey. However, the final decision lies with the Bureau of Prisons.
The conditions at MDC have long been criticized, with several courts acknowledging that the facility is not suitable for pre-trial detention. Over the past few years, the detention center has seen a series of tragic incidents, including inmate deaths by suicide and even a murder just this past summer.
Combs’ attorneys pointed out these issues in their motion for bail, arguing that MDC is an unsafe environment.
