A Michigan man who begged police for help is now fighting for his life after an SUV deliberately struck him, authorities say.
Haider Al Fadawi, 40, visited Dearborn Police hours before the attack to report an assault and express fear for his safety. His lawyers say officers brushed him off.
That night, a dark SUV swerved across lanes and hit Al Fadawi on Michigan Avenue. He was found unresponsive with a traumatic brain injury and remains in critical condition.
The driver, Murtadha Jabbar Alizairij, 38, allegedly fled on foot before turning himself in. He faces charges of assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to cause great bodily harm, and assault with a dangerous weapon.
Police say the men knew each other for 20+ years and were in a business dispute over a $500 traffic ticket.
Al Fadawi, a father of seven, is described as a beloved community member. Dearborn officials are reviewing why his safety concerns were dismissed.
